World War 2 summary

For nearly six years from 1939 to 1945 the United Kingdom played a vital role in one of the worst wars the world had ever experienced. World War 2 was classed as a total war, which means that every person, women and child, business, every service was involved at some point in World War 2.

The United Kingdom did not fight against the Germans on their own, which is why it was called a World War. 61 Countries were part of World War 2, which equates to a staggering 1.7 billion people, which in those days was 75% of the worlds population.battle of britain image

As you would expect the death toll of World War 2 was horrendous as a total of Fifty million people, not just soldiers lost their lives due to the war. Not every body involved lost their lives, and throughout the 6 years and hundreds of millions people were injured due to the conflict.

World War 2 was the largest conflict in history of the world, involving almost every country in the world. In World War 2 new advance technology was used to devastating effect such a nuclear weapons and long range missiles.

Countries which did not declare war were rare at this point in history, but they inlcude the Republic of Ireland (ROI), Sweden, Switzerland and most of Southeast Asia, but it must be taken into account taht just because these countries may not have physically fought on the battle field most of these were involved in non-warfare activities of some shape or form.
Other countries include:

  • Chile
  • Norway
  • Sweden
  • Portugal
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Andorra
  • Vatican City

How did the Second World War start?

Germany wanted to regain land that it had lost as a result of World War 1. When Hitler came to power one of his main aims was to repatriate these lands back under German rule. Hitler himself had served in the German army as a corporal in World War 1.
The more successful Germany became at regaining these lands the bolder Hitler became and progressed to take control of other countries as the allies appeared to be ineffective at stopping Germany from taking the land.
